Lysistrata (9)
Publication Date: November 27, 2014
Chapter: Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Literature
The sex strike, which sounded so great in theory, slowly begins to take its toll on the women as well. I’m not sure Lysistrata planned on how much torturing the men would end up torturing the women as well. As the women try to escape with increasingly flimsy excuses (one woman claims that she needs to give birth, when Lysistrata rightly notes that she wasn’t pregnant yesterday), Lysistrata plays prophet and lays down a surprisingly specfic and slightly explicit oracle about how the entire country will fall to ruin if they have even the slightest hint of hanky-panky. This quells the rebellion... for now.
