Lysistrata (7)
Publication Date: November 25, 2014
Chapter: Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Literature
The actual debate in question is pretty one-sided. The Magistrate blusters on with short interjections, while Lysistrata makes long, compelling arguements in favor of ending the war. Her primary position seems to be that women can spend the money in the bank better than men can. She’s also of the opinion that women shouldn’t be talked down to or shut out of important conversations.
Lysistrata notes that, when asking her husband about the state of the war or about other serious matters, he would insist that she just shut up and bend over. It’s possible this wasn’t the pinnacle of society for women.
