Historically, the Lord of Misrule was pretty awesome. Appointed by the King (or whoever was traditionally in charge of a particular area / town / household), the Lord of Misrule became the new temporary king for the twelve days of Christmas, commanding with absolute authority and making everyone else do increasingly goofy things. The Lord of Misrule's reign was also tied up with other activities, such as the aforementioned clothes swapping and the masquerading about in masks.
