Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (13 of 20)

Publication Date: June 23, 2010

Chapter: English Literature During The Middle Ages

Almost an entire page of small text in this story is devoted to a bizarre medieval cookbook in which the author goes into detail about how a deer is torn apart for dinner. It's really rather disturbing. I have no particular problem with the hunting of the deer, nor of it being eaten. The story is just rather gruesome in the detail it delves into at this point.

On the other hand, this is the same story that described a guy's head bouncing around the floor past people's feet after getting lopped off, so I really shouldn't be too surprised.
