Victor's mom is on her deathbed, dying of scarlet fever. I always find it kind of strange when characters in old books die from diseases we can easily cure with over-the-counter pills. I suppose it just demonstrates how far we've advanced in medical science. Woe to Mrs. Frankenstein. If only there was a Walgreens in the 18th Century.
