Chapter: English Literature in the Sixteenth Century
The story reaches its inevitable conclusion when Rosalind reveals herself to Duke Senior and Orlando. Everyone pretends to be surprised. Just after the revelation, all the lovers (including several superfulous people these comics aren’t interested in) get married (because this is a Shakespeare comedy). Then, to tack on even more happy endings, everyone discovers that Duke Frederick has decided to inexplicably mend his ways. Duke Senior is restored to his former glory and everyone goes back to their kingly estate to live happily ever after. Shakespeare himself realizes how dumb this ending is and subsequently apologizes for it in the epilogue.
