Chapter: English Literature in the Sixteenth Century
Jaques and Orlando meet in the forest alone, filled with thinly veiled contempt for each other. Each person wants to be alone, but they’re both too polite to dismiss the other. As a result, there’s a lot of “oh, heeeeeey” and “so, how about this weather, huh?” Eventually, their hostile small talk breaks down into actual hostility, with Jaques slagging off Rosalind (and love in general) while Orlando burns Jaques for being such a downer. They part company in extremely polite, yet extremely sour ways. “I shall tarry no longer with you.” “I am glad of your departure.”
