In ancient Greece, Aristophanes was a pretty big deal. Consider for a moment that his plays are almost the only ones that survive as examples of Greek comedy. The fact that his plays were preserved for well over two-thousand years implies that people thought they were actually worth saving. Still, without any points for comparison, it’s theoretically possible that his plays were actually kind of terrible and that some other people wrote considerably funnier work. That seems unlikely, but, y’know, history.
