D.H. Lawrence really liked tortoises. I believe I mentioned that. He wrote an entire series of poems about them. This one is about how tortoises are supposed to be silent but HE CAN HEAR THEM SCREAM. SCREAM, I TELL YOU. It's vaguely Lovecraftian.
