Don Juan (2)

Publication Date: April 21, 2015

Chapter: English Literature During The Romantic Period

So, after being caught in the midst of what would be considered statutory rape in most states, Don Juan is shipped off to travel the world and learn from his mistakes. This turns out to be unfortunate, as his boat sinks and he gets stuck on a life raft with some sailors, his tutor, and his dog. After several days of starvation, the tutor and the dog end up as lunch.

Finally, land is sighted, but Don Juan is the only person on the life boat capable of swimming through the shark-infested waters to land. This is where the story ends for us, because we're only reading what's in the Norton Anthology, not the whole, massive thing.

As an aside, the next canto ends with Byron completely ignoring the plot and just railing against the recent poetry of Wordsworth and Coleridge, which is the most delightful part of the entire poem.

Author: Lord Byron • Year: 1819 to 1824 • Info: Wikipedia
