As You Like It (18)
Publication Date: March 31, 2015
Chapter: English Literature in the Sixteenth Century
Touchstone falls in love with a woman named Audrey. That’s about it. She comes out of nowhere, as does Touchstone’s love, which emphasizes one major factor in “As You Like It”: it’s incredibly slight. Honestly, Shakespeare has enough plot to fill maybe twenty minutes of time on stage. The story of Rosalind’s exile and subsequent love with Orlando is an incredibly short one, so there is a ton of padding. This padding mostly involves superfulous scenes of Jaques singing dirges, or two random people springing out of nowhere to star in their own, secondary love story. One gets the impression that Shakespeare is just spinning his wheels.
