Chapter: English Literature in the Sixteenth Century
Look, I’m gonna be honest: half the reason I picked this play was because it started with a wrestling match. Now, I realize that wrestling circa 1599 was a tad different. I mean, obviously they weren’t hitting chair shots yet, or diving off of ladders. Still, I was intrigued. Rosalind, our heroine, has come to see a wrasslin’ match. This particular match features Orlando, who is, surprisingly, not immortal or transgender. He is, instead, a wormy little dude under the thumb of his more powerful brother. He aims to prove himself in combat against a champion wrestler. Folks, Orlando is pretty dumb.
