The Dream of the Rood (1 of 2)
Publication Date: April 6, 2010
Chapter: English Literature During The Middle Ages
"The Dream of the Rood" relates the epic struggle of a tree that gets cut down in its prime, is fashioned into an instrument of death, and then gains fame and fortune by having the Son of God nailed onto it. Seriously, the Rood - the cross upon which Christ was crucified - has a fairly complete character arc, which is odd, given that he's, you know, two inanimate planks of wood. Oh, and it may or may not have been written by Caedmon, our favorite Old English rock star. That's pretty much all you really need to know.
