Rip Van Winkle (2)

Publication Date: April 14, 2025

Chapter: American Literature, 1820 to 1865

Rip Van Winkle is a dude who, I suspect, most of you have heard about. He took a nap and woke up a few decades (and one American Revolution) later, an act that has since seeped into the American consciousness as a metaphor for, well, sleeping through literally any changes, great or small.

But prior to perhaps the greatest act of hibernation since that time Yogi Bear was so bad at sleeping that he woke up in time for a Christmas special, Rip Van Winkle was just another chronically unemployed dude who was “too tired” to work on his resume and instead got drunk with the ghosts of an ancient bowling team instead.
