The Beggar’s Opera, Part 8

I’ve seen a few comments about how Macheath is actually a notorious serial killer in the German version of this play (the Threepenny Opera, if memory serves).  In this, the original version, Macheath is more of a highwayman.  He’s a scoundrel, a thief, and a man-slut, but I haven’t gotten the impression that he actively murders people.  That said, it’s possible I just missed that part in my speed reading.

You got the usual English translation of the German title. A, sometimes used, more literal translation is “Large-Penny Opera”. I believe the reference is to the English penny of the early 1800s which was a large (stamped) disk of copper about 1/4 inch thick.

Most highwaymen kill at least occasionally, if only to induce compliance in the rest of their ‘customers’, or because someone gets stupid and goes for a weapon.

Final Fantasy VI Opera? You’re a nerd, Mr. Troutman. I’m a bigger nerd for consistently picking up your secrets, though.
