Ah, here’s an old high school standby. I believe this short story ended up in most 10th Grade textbooks in the U.S., and for good reason. It’s a stone cold classic that everyone needs to read at least once. I suspect it was the first Vonnegut for many, many young people.
That’s right, I don’t have anything snarky to say about this story. It’s just that good.

Read that story for the first time at book camp.
we didn’t actually read this one in class, but it was in the textbook…I read it one day because I was bored….
They’re doing a movie based on it, again. *shudder* I should have hope that it may be worth watching. HAW.
The first one was, I saw that then was disapointed when I read the short story.
I love it! Been looking forward to this one for quite a while.
On a related note, Batman can make anything funny: http://www.shortpacked.com/2005/comic/book-1-brings-back-the-80s/02-one-upmanship/a-25/
My recollection is that we had a Vonnegut short story in 12th grade – not this one. My first Vonnegut was the novel Player Piano.
sorry that should be Player Piano.
I remember reading this my junior year! I always wanted to write an alternate universe fanfic where everything turns out okay.
Thank you for doing a comic on it!
Viva le revolution! Down with the handicappers! All hail the new emperor!
Just need to prevent people from turning into dicks against the handicapped.
Huh – this one must of missed my textbook.
Then again, we don’t get English textbooks
We did this one, alongside Sound of Thunder I believe. Our book had background pictures of the weights and a mask, though it was more rust-colored geometric shapes than Shyguy. Thinking about it, I suppose about half the world would look like the people in Mirror Mask.
I never actually read this in high school, but I did read it in the dystopia anthology “Brave New Worlds”
