The 2001 book is interesting in that it’s not an adaption, nor did it inspire the original film. It was actually written co-currently with the film’s production, giving the two a somewhat symbiotic relationship. Of course, Clarke would go on to right a few sequels, thus expanding upon the film greatly.
In any event, everyone likes monkeys, right?

I also was immediately reminded of the intro to “History of the World Part One” – I laughed myself silly at the apes greeting the sunrise…
I like the extrapolation
I can think of a few sequels that could stand to be righted.
Has nobody of you youngsters seen Mel Brooks History of the World: Part I ? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082517
Clarke was also not too impressed by Planet of the Apes getting a special award for their ape make-up. He went around for a while after that telling people that the Academy must have thought that 2001 had used real apes.
He meant what he said. Google it, if you’re over 18.
Fleshlight, he says… o_o This conjures disturbing imagery.
