The Future (Or Lack Thereof) of Lit Brick
on January 1, 2012Hey there, sports fans. I’ve some unwelcome news: Lit Brick is going to be entering a hiatus in the next few weeks. There are several reasons for this, some artistic, but the largest factor is that – as a businessman of sorts – I can no longer devote most of my time to a comic that isn’t growing in readership. To perfectly honest, the comic’s numbers haven’t changed in over a year, despite advertising campaigns and big links from other websites. As a cartoonist trying his best to be a professional, I’m forced to acknowledge that Lit Brick has become a waste of my valuable time, even though I still enjoy creating it.
Starting on January 30th, I’ll therefore be refocusing my energy on a new project, which I currently believe to be the best (and funniest) thing I’ve ever written, and which I suspect will have the potential to reach a far broader audience than the very niche-based LB. I know this will disappoint many of you, but if it’s any consolation, I’ll still be drawing comics every week. They just won’t be about obscure pieces of literature. As further consolation, you may be pleased to know that Molly is a character in the new project, so a least a little bit of Lit Brick will continue to live on elsewhere.
I’ll have more information for you as the month goes on. Though plans can always change, I’ve targeted the new project to be updating Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, beginning on the 30th, without fail. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, when time allows, Delusionary State will continue, at delusionarystate.com. There will be additional bonus material on weekends, again as time allows, though that’s not anything I can comment on at the moment.
So, while Lit Brick will be taking a break for the foreseeable future, I’ll be drawing more comics than ever before in 2012. I hope you’ll tune in for them. I truly thank you guys for your support, as it’s always meant the world to me.

Awww this makes me SO sad! I read the comics because of how particular and uncommon they were. I’m not sure if I’ll carry over to your next project, though I definitely wish you luck and success. I will, however, continue to show some of your LB comics to my peers. Who knows, maybe I will check out your next project and love it? Best of luck! Keep on keepin’ on!
:’( dang.
That’s the second webcomic i read that’s going down, now.
Aww, my comment got nuked =( Even after you tweeted it
I think your comment is on the Delusion State comic post. I have to move all those over.
I’ll certainly give your new comic a try, but of course being a part of the niche audience for LB, I can’t help but be a little disappointed…
I think it’s awful you won’t be doing Lit Brick anymore, but I think that what we’re really coming here for is the (hopefully soon to be patented, because it’s too good not to be) Troutmaniacal style. Sure, the backdrop’ll be changing, but as long as the non sequiturs and inappropriate jokes we all find so endearing remain, I for one will support your decision.
I’m honestly looking forward to this, I’m looking forward to this quite a bit. And I’ve never been known to have any interactions with change beyond fighting it off with the nearest cutlery. But if you leave this project unfinished, Troutman, I’m coming after you with my runcible spoon.
Well, here’s to hoping you can draw enough attention to it with your other projects that the hiatus doesn’t last long.
As someone who has been reading from day one, I am really sad to see it pass. It was an awesome comic while it lasted
I also hope that “when time allows” is most of the time for delusionary state as its an amazing read, and I want more of it!
I very much hope you pick up the Lit Brick project again at *some* point, even if it’s just once a week. I would love to see a full illustrated companion to the Norton’s Anthology of English Literature come of this eventually.
How far through the text did you end up getting (or maybe “will you end up getting,” considering there are a few more strips left in the works)?
Lit Brick began two months after my army service started, and (assuming the last LB strip will be the 27th) it will run until the day after I am discharged. This comic will definitely be a marker of time for me.
Le sigh. Another great comic, stalled. Ah, well. Mayhap you’ll throw a page, every now and again. I’m sure there’ll be more LitBrick to get off your chest.
I am disappoint, sirrah. However, I like your style so I’m pretty sure this next one will be just as cool.
I’m sorry to read this, though I concede your points. I do hope you’ll be able to occasionally enlighten the masses with a Molly-style comic if your new comic project allows her fellow characters (and therefor us) to keeps tabs on what “she’s reading,” though that’ll be entirely up to you.
So long as you have fun working on and drawing the new one, it’s all good. ^^
Nooooo! I love Lit Brick! There is so much more to be riffed. Don’t let it end this way.
I was only reading you for Lit Brick. I frankly don’t enjoy DS. I guess it’s time to take you out of the old feed reader, then.
WHAT?!?!?! I *just* discover this hilarious comic and you decide to kill it?!?! WTF?!?!?!
As someone who just finished the archive crawl through Lit Brick last week, I’m saddened by this news, as yet another Troutman project dies on the vine of lost potential, cancelled before it’s its time like Firefly or Vigilante Ho.
Troutman: the Fox Television of Webcomicry.
(I kid, I kid! Will be interested in whatever new comes from you)
“Troutman: the Fox Television of Webcomicry.”
That should be my e-mail signature.
:.(
I shall miss LB, but look forward to your next project. I’m sure it will be awesome.
Looking forward to seeing what you’ve got cooking for 2012. Happy New Year.
I know this has probably been said a lot, and it may even be a little cliched, but if you enjoy doing something, then it’s clearly not a waste of time. And your readership DID change: I started reading it.
As did I.
The literati grieve.
No, sorry, I’m done. Delusionary State? Flatt Feet? Now Lit Brick? I can’t work up any enthusiasm for yet another project that will likely be left half-finished. Sorry, John – Won’t be reading the new one, won’t be checking for updates here either.
